PART 1: NARRATIVE TEXT (Legend)

Instructions: Read the following text carefully and answer the questions.

The Legend of Crying Stone
Once upon a time, in a small village in West Kalimantan, there lived a poor widow and her beautiful daughter. The daughter was very beautiful, but she had a very bad behavior. She was lazy and arrogant. She never helped her mother and spent all her time preening in front of the mirror.

One day, they went to the market. The daughter wore her best clothes and walked in front, while the mother walked behind carrying a basket in dirty clothes. People in the market were amazed by the girl’s beauty. One man asked, “Is that your mother?” The girl arrogantly replied, “No, she is my servant!”

The mother was deeply hurt. She prayed to God, “O God, please punish this ungrateful child.” Suddenly, the girl’s legs turned into stone. She cried and begged for forgiveness, “Mom, please forgive me!” But it was too late. Slowly, her whole body turned into stone. People can still see the tears falling from the stone, which is why it is called the Crying Stone (Batu Menangis).
